Humans are very good at disrupting nature through their modes of transportation. We travel places and goods travel to us. The constant motion of commerce – and its associated pollution – barely registers in our global human psyche. For the majority of us, "Amazon" primarily conjures the image of a store before evoking thoughts of the rainforest.
By photographing the colorful tapestry of commercial river traffic and employing the time-stretching dreaminess of long exposure, I aim to unveil a perspective unseen by the naked eye. With a nod to the historical views of the Hudson River School of painters, the resulting images transcend the fleeting moment, transforming the vessels into luminous streaks of light against the surrounding, static landscape.
In essence, these long exposures are not simply photographs of ships; they are meditations on time, movement, and the ever-changing nature of our world. My photographs invite the viewer to contemplate the fleeting nature of existence, while simultaneously asking us to consider the effects of consumerism and consumption on our world.
The project is further complemented by the inclusion of maritime maps displaying each photographed ship’s journey around the world over a year-long period. These maps, illustrating the shipping lanes of individual vessels, seek to convey the magnitude and scale of commercial ship traffic around the world.
