Sixty seconds of oil tanks at Kingston Point Beach.

Yesterday, after completing a successful large-scale ink jet printing at @cpw_kingston (Thank you @alicia.schirrmeister for the assistance) for my Erie Canal exhibition with @eriecanalmuseum_syracuse I headed down to the waterfront. It's always exciting to try and capture the remnants of available light. It changes so fast and especially with long exposures every minute counts. This is a scene that caught my eye, between the tranquility of the sand and the somewhat menacing shapes of the oil tanks there was something there to see, ponder and capture.

Framed Print Sale! Make this Black Friday a colorful one with a purchase of one of these seven, framed and ready to hang large photographs, all made around the Hudson Valley.

I have four photos from my Shipping Lane series available at 30" x45" and three photos from my Locomotion series available at 23" x 60". They are framed in white wood (similar to this mockup) without glazing. Glass or plexiglass can be added for additional fee or they can be hung as-is.

These photos were shown at various exhibitions this year, mentioned in my @cpw_kingston and @eriecanalmuseum_syracuse artist talks, sold at @klompchinggallery last year and are now back in my studio. I want to make more room and those are priced to go. DM me for details and I'll be happy to make one of these yours! A percentage of each sale will be donated to Doctors without Borders in support of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Since those are framed already (and large) I can only offer local delivery or pickup from my studio in Catskill. For longer distance purchase I offer other options. DM me as well.

CPKC is the combination of two historic railways: Canadian Pacific (CP) and Kansas City Southern (KCS). Apparently it's the first single-line rail network connecting Canada, the U.S. and Mexico.

Spent a rainy but beautiful afternoon on an Erie Canal cruise yesterday, last one for the year before the Canal closes for boat traffic!

During my Erie Canal artist residency I mostly explore, investigate and rephotograph locations above the water line, so it was great to be inside the canal and experience the lock in action. Highly recommended and I plan on taking more trips as such next year.

Artist talk next Saturday! Join me in person (or on Zoom) on October 5th at 1pm at the Erie Canal Museum in Syracuse. Link in my bio.

As part of our 2024 Deeper Dive Lecture Series, photographer Alon Koppel will present work he has created so far as part of his Erie Canal Artist-in-Residence in 2024.

Alon will introduce participants to the concept of rephotography (or repeat photography), in which an artist strives to make a photograph of a certain location again, based as accurately as possible on existing historical photographs or postcards, mostly found through the archives of the Erie Canal Museum.

The two images, historical and contemporary, are then displayed as a diptych next to each other or overlaid on top of one another, sometimes showing how much the landscape has changed and other times becoming a surprising new image all together.

Rephotography aims to show us a view of “then and now” and help us visualize how much some places have changed over time. With respect to the views of the Erie Canal and its surroundings, the project aims to reflect on the magnitude of human change on the landscape.

Alon will share some completed photographs, show some images that are still in progress, and will discuss his photographic technique and the equipment that helps him achieve those results.
