Here is one more trichromatic photograph that I made with a monochromatic Leica camera while in residency at @tusentakkfoundation — exposing the camera’s sensor to red, green and blue light rays separately - and sequentially - allowed me to explore both making long exposure images and the origins of color photography, two subjects are deeply interested in.

While I was mostly focused on making long-exposure

While I was mostly focused on making long-exposure photos at @tusentakkfoundation I also had time and access to equipment that allowed to experiment with other techniques, including a monochrome Leica camera.

Here is a long trichromatic exposure of Lake Michigan from one of those photo shoots. This is a photo technique that previously I only tried making using a B&W medium format film so it was nice to give it a digital try.

Back in the Hudson Valley after a month long resid

Back in the Hudson Valley after a month long residency @tusentakkfoundation. I will continue to look at the images I’ve created there, examine and think about ways of printing and displaying the work from my series Lake Horizon.

Here is one option that I tried while there, a grid of forty-two long exposure photographs that is organized in chronological order from a very icy lake at the top left corner down to no ice at all just days before I left Northern Michigan. I am sure that when I look at the photos I’ll have seven more photos to add at the bottom and finish the grid more fully but in this case I had room for a title that defines the whole project.

On my last day of residency at @tusentakkfoundatio

On my last day of residency at @tusentakkfoundation I was able (between packing) to make some long exposure photos of the lake to add to my series Lake Horizon.

While I was observing the waves and listening to the wind I noticed something on the beach, I thought it was either a piece of wood or a dead bird. I was hoping it would be some beach debris but unfortunately it was a bird, perhaps the corpse of a loon. Dead yet so majestic in its final rest.

I decided that for my last few photographs here it would be fitting to make some long exposures on the bird and the lake, combining what I've been noticing and documenting/photographing here for the last month. It's been an incredible experience to be here and my excitement is tinged with sadness, so I am sharing this final photo from this evening. Thank you all for looking and reading my notes. Thousand thanks to @tusentakkfoundation for an unforgettable experience.

As I prepare to depart my amazing artist residency

As I prepare to depart my amazing artist residency @tusentakkfoundation soon I am sharing some highlights from my time here.

Typically, once I have a series of photos that engage with a single subject I look for ways to incorporate them together as either a series of photos or merging them into one print. This photo is on result of that, a 16" x 21" print showing twenty-one photos from my Lake Horizon project, each 1" wide vertical strip accounts for a single exposure, merged together to show a total time spent from three weeks ago to now, displayed together from left to right.

This piece addresses the time spent creating work outside as well time spent in the studio thinking about the landscape and making an effort to encompass it all. The other three photos are each a fifteen-minute long exposure that show how different the lake can appear at different times. Thanks @tusentakkfoundation for offering me such an amazing place to stay and work at! Thanks everyone who followed my work here and provided feedback and support.

Encountered several dead birds including seagulls,

Encountered several dead birds including seagulls, loons and possibly ducks on the shores of Lake Michigan. As the ice melts and I take walks here while in residency @tusentakkfoundation this is part of the reality of our environment. I researched this and it seems to be due to Avian Flu.

I am very sad to see this. This photo is an homage to this beautiful seagull. So far I mostly shared beautiful/sublime landscape photos of my time here but my work often involves looking critically at the landscape and this is an unavoidable part of that.

The bird population around the world is already in decline so this is hard to see but also shouldn't be ignored. I reported the sightings to Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) but not sure what else can be done.

Yesterday was quite windy here and just before the sun said goodbye for the day a streak of light appeared through heavy clouds.

The gray color at the bottom third of the image is due to sand turbulence near the shore.

What a difference two weeks make! I made the first

What a difference two weeks make! I made the first photo, a sixty-minute (yes, 60) long exposure, two days ago, on March 13th. The second photo, a fifteen-minute long exposure, was made on February 27th. In the span of exactly two weeks the landscape I’ve been documenting has transformed rapidly.

Gone are the snow and ice on the banks of Lake Michigan that took almost a third of the bottom part of the photo when I arrived here. By returning to the exact same spot on a daily basis I am not only creating one photo a day but also observing the changing weather by observing a longer period of time. Although I have to admit I didn’t expect the change to be so rapid in just two weeks.

This series titled “Lake Horizon” is being created while in residency at @tusentakkfoundation, I am grateful for the access being provided to me.

Here are some "interrupted" trees near a fairly busy road in Traverse City, MI on an early morning. I spent a couple of hours with them.

Apparently in the summer the road traffic here is much heavier. I love photographing places in the winter, the light is soft and beautiful, less people are around and it's easier to slow down.
